Dr. Carmel Nanthakumar, PhD, FRSB

Carmel Nanthakumar is a senior scientific leader in drug discovery, translational biology and clinical development with over 20 years’ experience gained at GSK, AstraZeneca and Merck. At GSK, she held several high-level leadership and scientific roles leading global teams across pre-clinical and clinical development programmes. Carmel is especially interested in the application of cutting-edge science including high content screening and the generation of multi-dimensional data sets to bridge the gap between pre-clinical biology and early phase clinical studies.
Carmel completed a degree in Genetics and PhD in cell biology at University College London (UCL) studying TGF-b biology and the pathogenesis of idiopathic pulmonary fibrosis (IPF). She is a leading expert in fibrosis particularly in relation to lung and respiratory disease with publications in Nature Communications and Nature Drug Discovery.
